On the Flatbush district of Brooklyn, Prospect Leffert Gardens is a residential community. At the heart of the area, Empire Boulevard (formerly known as Malbone Street) connects the streets of Clarkson Avenue to the south, New York Avenue to the east, and Ocean Avenue to the west, where Prospect Park is located. A NYC Landmark was given to the Prospect-Lefferts Gardens Historic District in 1979.
Caribbean and African-American residents dominate the neighborhood’s broad ethnic mix. Gentrification in Prospect Lefferts Gardens has been on the rise since the early aughts. Real estate development has accelerated, and the number of new inhabitants from other categories has risen, as a result of this. Its principal ZIP code is 11225 and it is a part of Brooklyn Community District 9. The 71st Precinct of the New York City Police Department is responsible for patrolling the area.
The 40th District of the New York City Council represents the area. When the Prospect Lefferts Gardens Neighborhood Association was formed in 1968, they coined the moniker Prospect Lefferts Gardens (PLGNA). The name Prospect Lefferts Gardens is a combination of the names of three neighboring locations: Prospect Park, Lefferts Manor, and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. In honor of the Dutch colonial family who built it and owned a large number of slaves in Brooklyn, the manor was christened Lefferts Manor in 1810.
