New York City comprises five boroughs and each one is a separate county in the state. The five are: Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, The Bronx and Staten Island.
New York City can trace its beginnings to a trading post founded by Dutch colonists in 1624 on lower Manhattan. The post was named New Amsterdam in 1626 and the city plus the surrounding enclaves fell into English hands in 1664. It was renamed New York when Charles II King of England, granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York. The city served as the capital of the United States from 1785 up to 1790. New York City’s most iconic landmark, the Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they arrived by ship back in the 19thand early 20thcentury.
