Located in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, the Barclays Center is a multi-purpose arena. The Brooklyn Nets of the NBA and the New York Liberty of the Women’s WNBA both play at this arena regularly. In addition to sporting and entertainment activities, the arena holds concerts, conventions, and other events.

In the future, the arena will be a component of Pacific Park, a business and residential development expected to cost $4.9 billion. There is a subway station on the 2, 3, 4, 5, B, D, N, Q, R and W lines, as well as the LIRR’s Atlantic Terminal just a few blocks away from the site on Atlantic Avenue.

It was proposed in 2004 when real estate mogul Bruce Ratner purchased the Nets for $300 million as the initial step in the process to build a new home for the team. However, the arena had severe difficulties during its development. There are concerns about its use of the eminent domain and environmental damage.

There was a great deal of community opposition to, especially as public subsidies were used to demolish residential structures and businesses such as the Ward Bakery, which led to many lawsuits. The project’s funding was also cut off as a result of the worldwide recession in 2009.

With no money in place for the project, development was put on hold until 2010. In March 2010, work began, and the arena was inaugurated in September 2012, with the participation of around 200 protesters. On September 28, 2012, it hosted its debut event, a Jay-Z performance.

The Brooklyn Arena Local Development Corporation is a governmental company owned by the Empire State Development Authority of New York State. Owner Joseph Tsai owns the Brooklyn Event Center LLC, which leases it to Tsai’s BSE Global, which manages the operations and revenue.

One day after the announcement on January 18, 2007, Barclays Center was renamed to honor London-based financial giant Barclays. According to reports, the banking and financial services company agreed to pay the team $400 million over the next 20 years for the naming rights of their Brooklyn home, eclipsing the previous record for naming rights to an American indoor arena set by Royal Philips Electronics in 1999, for $185 million over 20 years. However, by the end of 2009, the rights had been renegotiated, and they now total around $200 million. Both in-arena ATMs and Barclays retail banks are absent from the US.
