Located in Brooklyn’s northwestern part, Carroll Gardens is a neighborhood. I-278, the Gowanus and Brooklyn–Queens Expressways and Ninth Street (south), Degraw and Warren Streets (north), Hoyt and Smith Streets (east), Ninth Street or the Gowanus Expressway (west). The Carroll Gardens Historic District, as well as other parts of the neighborhood, are known for their vast front gardens, hence the name “Carroll Gardens.” However, despite its Irish surname, the area has come to be known as an Italian-American community in recent years.
