Greenwood Heights is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. It was named partially after the adjacent Green-Wood Cemetery. Greenwood Heights is a part of Brooklyn Community District 7 along with Windsor Terrace, Sunset Park and South Slope. The population was 849 in 2000. When Canisteo and Troupsburg joined in 1827, Greenwood was born. For West Union in 1845, Greenwood was used, but in 1848 Jasper was reclaimed from that land.
During the mid-20th century, what we now call Greenwood Heights was called Bush Terminal. In 1966 this area was designated a ‘poverty area’. After this, the area from 36th Street ro the Prospect Expressway was incorporated into Sunset Park. The area was called Greenwood Heights as early as the late 1980s. In the 2000s as the gentrification of South Brooklyn accelerated, the area was rebranded as Greenwood Heights.
In November 2005, the area was rezoned which brought an influx of luxury condominium apartments into a previously residential area that was mainly made up of one and two-family homes. While new developments have occurred, there has been a new trend of home renovations in the area, restoring many of the areas previously neglected 1900 wood-frame houses.
